Part 1 – The Biblical Background

The Abrahamic Covenant – The Basic Provisions

1. Abraham’s descendants would become a great nation (12:2a).

2. God would bless Abraham and make his name great (12:2b).

3. Abraham would be a blessing to all nations (12:2-3).

4. God would bless those who blessed Abraham, but curse those who cursed him (12:3).

The Abrahamic Covenant – The Full Scope

5. God gave the descendants of Abraham the land where he dwelt (12:7; 17:8).

5. Abraham’s descendants would be innumerable (13:16; 15:5; 22:17).

6. Abraham would be the father of many nations (17:5).

7. Kings would come from him (17:6).

8. The covenant would be eternal (17:7).

9. They would be victorious over their enemies (22:17).

The Abrahamic Covenant – The Land Provision:

1. Abraham was called to leave his country and go to a land that God would show him (12:1).

2. God promised the land to Abraham and his descendants forever (12:7; 13:14-17).

3. God confirmed the land promise by making an unconditional covenant with Abraham (15:7-21).

4. The extent of the land that God gave to Abraham and his descendants is from the Nile River to the Euphrates River which has not yet been realized (15:18).

5. God confirmed his covenant and the land provision as unconditional and everlasting (17:7-8).

Three Related Covenants:

1. The Land Covenant repeated the provisions of the Abrahamic Covenant and expanded upon the basis of Israel’s enjoyment of it (Deut. 30:1-8).

2. The Davidic Covenant expanded the national aspect of the Abrahamic Covenant and specified that David’s house would occupy the throne of Israel eternally (2 Sam. 7:12-17).

3. The New Covenant specified how God intends to bring about the implementation of the Abrahamic Covenant (Jer. 31:31-34).
